Notes on the current inventory of hieroglyphic spellings:
The lemma list of the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae is capable of being searched for hieroglyphic spellings. However, the data set available for this purpose is still
limited.
For each lemma, a standard spelling has been entered which either corresponds to what is listed in the left column of the Wörterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache or has been
drawn from other sources. A standard spelling is difficult to define. The history of word spellings is best documented on the slips that record spellings as part of the Slip Archive of the
Wörterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache (Digitalisiertes Zettelarchiv, cf. Burkhardt et al., 2000, 17).
In 2009, the search for spellings was complemented by a new function allowing users to enter new spellings. Both functions combined provide the basis for developing the digital
inventory of hieroglyphic spellings into a full historical documentation of word spellings. For reasons of capacity, this inventory will remain incomplete for the time being. However, many a good and
useful result can already be derived at this first stage of development.
